Meet the Designer

Who am I ?

I am an innovative designer maker of high end product. My eponymous brand “SOLOMIA” has been recognised in the design world for re-designing, re-shaping, and re-thinking objects for the modern world.
My work combines craft and technology, led by a depth of understanding of manufacturing processes. I am skilled in complex model and mould making, casting and glazing.
I am known to collaborate to produce privately commissioned work for hospitality, fashion designers, architects and visual merchandisers.

My Story

I grew up in Jersey C.I. At the age of 18 I moved to England to study, enrolling in a BA in Ceramic Design at Bath Spa University. Following my degree I was awarded 1st prize in the 2006 Student Art Exhibition at Jersey Art Centre, which led to sponsorship by Jersey Pottery to create my first wholesale order for Coopers Coffee merchants.
In the subsequent years I worked solidly on developing my eponymous brand “SOLOMIA”, exhibiting in trade and retail shows, and supplying stockists across the UK + Europe. My highly innovative Arko range of hand-made ceramic cups and bowls are inspired by modern architecture and Bauhaus, and incorporate functional designs.

Her designs have been described as having ‘the sculptural essence of modernist pioneer Eileen Gray’.

Barbara Chandler said of her:

Her work has appeared in Elle Decorations, Financial Times: How to Spend it; AnOther, Wallpaper and Livingetc.
Shortlisted for Best British Design 2010 for Elle Decoration, and 2011 Ceramic & Glassware Award Homes & Gardens, Solomia’s motivation and positive energy is reflected in her bold and graphic designs.
She has exhibited in venues such as Ceramic Art London, London’s Old Spitalfields Market for Origin, Pulse at Earls Court, and Top Drawer at Olympia.
Her model and mould making skills have been featured in a 5 page spread in Advanced Pottery by Linda Bloomfield.
In 2012 she received her MA from The Royal College of Art, Ceramics and Glass programme, with her degree show featuring 7 new designs in a mix of materials. Her two years of study involved a work placement with product designer Robin Levien (RDI), which helped her bridge the gap between being a hand-maker of goods, to thinking about designing for industrial production.
In 2012, Solomia MA RCA was selected for the RCA – PwC Mentoring Program that taught strategies for growing creative ideas into successful businesses and social enterprises. Since 2006, Solomia has had a mix diversity of projects, personal, commissioned and fabricating works that has given her skill set a level of understanding and confidence to producing high-level design work.
SOLOMIA’s new kitted out design studio is located in the influential and creative hub that is London Shoreditch. She is part of a resourceful and lively network at Workspace- Brickfields.
She has successfully carved her path to work solely on her imperious brand “SOLOMIA” as well as collaborating and working with leaders in her field.
